Punta Sabbioni and Burano

After being away from Gus at Punta Sabbioni for a week we decided to spend the day with him giving him a clean up. It was actually a nice relaxing day not dashing off anywhere. Mid afternoon a big storm came in - good to rinse him off on the outside. Glenn did a sweep around the campsite checking if anything should be put under cover for people who weren’t around. He took in some washing from a line and put them in the bucket beside it. He couldn’t get it under the camper vans on either side - he wasn’t sure which one the washing belonged to - so he brought it back to our van while the storm passed. He later took the washing back - and one of the vans had gone. More on the story later.
We had a nice evening watching a movie and eating a healthy veggie curry and dhal - good after all the pizza and pasta consumed.
Next day we caught the ferry to Burano - only 2 stops from Punta Sabbioni. We had a nice walk around enjoying the colorful houses and busy streets around the canals.
The small fishing port still seemed active. Fishing must have been the main industry for the island.
There were many interesting sights including the nearby island of Torcello where the Venetian’s first settled the islands.
Burano is also famous for lace. We went to the Lace Museum there which had a big history from the 15th century. Many of the Burano ladies were lace makers from home.
As the skill was dying out a lace school was set up in 1872 to learn from the last elderly lady who could teach it. It went on until 1970. It was very interesting showing examples of the different laces from the 15th century onwards.
There are still some girls creating modern lace designs - one creating Disney characters.
We then went for a last Venice lunch. We had crab gnocchi and porcini risotto with our last Venetian Aperol spritzes to wash it down.

We went back to the campsite on the ferry and grabbed the bikes to visit the wetlands of the Venice lagoon again. We went out as far as we could go on bikes - and then walked a bit. Glenn saw many different birds - but it looks like the flamingos have gone. Perhaps the rainstorm with the lower temperatures may have scared them away.

The sunset over Venice was very dramatic

We got back to Gus and the clothes Glenn had saved in the storm was not owned by the remaining camper van there. So the owners had probably left forgetting about their washing. Glenn was then told by the campsite owner that he is responsible for the washing and has to take it away. The campsite takes no responsibility for stolen or missing items. We now have someone else’s washtub and bag of swimming clothes. If we don’t hear within the week from the campsite we will give it all to charity. What would you do?
After that conundrum we had dinner, watched the Widow Clicquot movie - very good - and went to bed.

Charity - good thinking!
