We left the aire and drove the 30 minutes along the Venice lagoon seeing lots of cyclists on good cycle paths and silhouettes of lots of towers a long way over the wetlands.

We drove past the ferry terminal to Venice and arrived at our little campsite Al Bateo Agricampeggio surrounded by huge hedges.

After getting settled in we went cycling to check out the bird areas.

We cycled though the busy ferry area to a much quieter bike path.

We hadn’t had lunch so thought we would replace it with a gelato- we hadn’t had one for 2 days. We detoured to a nearby gelato shop - very quiet as most of the tourists have gone from the nearby beach areas. Glenn had liquorice flavour again - this time very black. I had Bailey’s Irish Cream!!

Back in the bikes we crossed a bridge to the island area. We found a little town with a large church first.

We cycled along a busy canal where a lot of the locals seem to travel mostly in boats.

We then got out into the real wetland area.

The towers on the horizon may be Venice or Burano.

We then arrived at the tiny village of Lio Piccolo out by itself in the middle of the marshes.

It was quite busy in the early 1900s, but hardly anyone lives here now. It is now the centre for bird watching. We saw many egrets, ibis and a large group of flamingo.

It is very peaceful out here with little noise. It’s amazing considering frenetic Venice is just a few kilometers away over the water.

It started to brighten up giving us lots more reflections.

We got back to the busy ferry terminal area with boats leaving around every 10 minutes.

We then headed back to the van to get packed for our next adventure in Venice.
